Jesus’ Deity: New Testament

Where did Jesus say, “I am God, worship me”?

Demonstrating the deity of Jesus through Old Testament (OT) fulfillments is a central theme of the New Testament (NT). Often, this is shown when NT authors take a passage that originally referred to YHWH (the LORD) and apply it directly to Jesus.

Here is an example from each of the 27 books of the New Testament:

The Gospels & Acts

  • Matthew 1:23: Fulfills - Isaiah 7:14. Jesus is called "Immanuel," which literally means "God with us."

  • Mark 1:2–3: Fulfills - Isaiah 40:3. John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus, but the OT text says the way is being prepared for YHWH.

  • Luke 8:22–25: Fulfills - Psalm 107:29. Jesus calms the storm, a power the OT attributes exclusively to God.

  • John 8:58: Fulfills - Exodus 3:14. Jesus claims the divine name "I AM," asserting His eternal existence before Abraham.

  • Acts 2:34–36: Fulfills - Psalm 110:1. Peter argues that Jesus is the "Lord" to whom the Father spoke, seated at the right hand of God.

The Pauline Epistles

  • Romans 10:13: Fulfills - Joel 2:32. Paul says "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved," applying a verse about YHWH directly to Jesus.

  • 1 Corinthians 1:31: Fulfills - Jeremiah 9:24. Paul applies the command to "boast in the LORD" (YHWH) to boasting in Jesus Christ.

  • 2 Corinthians 4:6: Fulfills - Genesis 1:3. Paul links the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness to the "light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

  • Galatians 4:4: Fulfills - Genesis 3:15. Jesus is the "offspring of woman" sent by God, showing His divine origin and mission to crush the serpent.

  • Ephesians 4:8: Fulfills - Psalm 68:18. Paul applies a Psalm about God’s triumphal ascent to Jesus’ ascension.

  • Philippians 2:10–11: Fulfills - Isaiah 45:23. God swears that "to Me every knee shall bow," which Paul applies to the name of Jesus.

  • Colossians 1:16: Fulfills - Psalm 102:25. Jesus is identified as the Creator of all things, a role reserved for God alone.

  • 1 Thessalonians 3:13: Fulfills - Zechariah 14:5. The "coming of the Lord with all his holy ones" (originally YHWH) is applied to the return of Jesus.

  • 2 Thessalonians 1:7–8: Fulfills - Isaiah 66:15. Jesus returns in "flaming fire" to execute judgment, a description of YHWH's appearance in the OT.

  • 1 Timothy 3:16: Fulfills - the "mystery of godliness." He who was "manifested in the flesh" (referencing the Incarnation of the Divine Word).

  • 2 Timothy 4:1: Fulfills - Psalm 50:6. God is the judge, yet Paul states Jesus Christ will judge the living and the dead.

  • Titus 2:13: Fulfills - Isaiah 43:11. Paul calls Jesus "our great God and Savior," using titles the OT says belong to YHWH alone.

  • Philemon 1:3: (Implicit) By placing Jesus on equal footing with God the Father in the "grace and peace" greeting, Paul acknowledges His divine status.

The General Epistles & Revelation

  • Hebrews 1:8: Fulfills - Psalm 45:6. The Father says to the Son, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever."

  • James 2:1: Fulfills - Isaiah 60:1. James calls Jesus the "Lord of Glory," a title for the manifest presence of God (the Shekinah).

  • 1 Peter 2:7–8: Fulfills - Isaiah 8:13–14. Isaiah says YHWH is the stone that makes men stumble; Peter applies this to Jesus.

  • 2 Peter 1:1: Fulfills - Psalm 18:31. Peter refers to "our God and Savior Jesus Christ," equating Jesus with the only Savior known in the OT.

  • 1 John 5:20: Fulfills - Jeremiah 10:10. John calls Jesus "the true God and eternal life."

  • 2 John 1:3: Like Philemon, the blessing from "God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son" implies shared divine essence.

  • 3 John 1:11: John notes that "whoever does evil has not seen God," while his Gospel emphasizes that to see Jesus is to see God.

  • Jude 1:5: Fulfills - Exodus 12. Some early manuscripts of Jude say "Jesus" (rather than "the Lord") delivered the people out of Egypt.

  • Revelation 1:17–18: Fulfills - Isaiah 44:6. Jesus calls Himself "the First and the Last," the exact title YHWH uses to assert His unique deity.
